As we debate the Voice, I’ve been thinking about my late friend Michael

During my four years as the Herald’s Parliament House bureau chief, I was lucky to watch giants of our industry at work. Some, such as Michelle Grattan and Laurie Oakes, weren’t employed by the Herald but the nature of the Canberra press gallery, where competitors have adjoining offices, still allowed you to be exposed to their brilliance.
